Where Merlin Mann is the Man and nutmeg makes a fool of herself. again.

Merlin Mann writes about creativity.  Think about it; there must be a lot of pressure in that job.

If you ever have the opportunity to listen to him speak, take it, because he will make you want to run from the room and build a cathedral.

He was also very real and very funny.

This is what he had to say at Izeafest about blogging:

Find your obsession
every day, explain it to
one person you respect.
Edit everything, skip shortcuts
and try not to be a dick.
Get better.

He inspired me because he was the only one who talked about the writing.  Sometimes I forget about that part, the part that got me into this thing in the first place.

On the last day I got up the nerve to speak to him.  This was HUGE because aside from the guy who kept the ice bucket filled, I hadn’t had the nerve to talk to a single soul throughout the entire two days.  Our conversation went something like this:

NM:  I just wanted to tell you I was inspired by your speech.

MM:  Oh yea?  Why?

NM:  Ah, duh, um, because it was like totally awesome and stuff.

MM: Well thanks, and brilliant brilliant something or brilliant brilliant other, don’t you think?

NM:  Oh yea, and other people suck and stupid stupid something.

MM:  On that brilliant note, have you read this awesome book on creativity?

NM:  Um, no…

MM:  How about this one on writing?

NM:  Uum, no…

MM:  Surely you’ve read this one on creativity?

NM:  Uuum, no, but I do read Peanuts!

MM:  Ah, more brilliant brilliant intelligent something or other, yes?

NM:  Okay but Dude, I like saw a typo in Shoemoney’s power point.

MM:  Okay, bye now!

Do you see why I need to keep my mouth shut at all times?

Do you see why it’s best if I do not leave the house?

Do you see why it’s so hard to be me?

Crap, crap, crappity crap.

Check him out at his site on creativity, 43 Folders.com.  Notice I’m not linking in hopes that he’d done a huge amount of crack that morning and has since completely forgotten me.  Please don’t tell him the crazy lady sent you.

Check back tomorrow for a Filch It Friday GIVE-AWAY!

Thank you, Ali! Typical me, five folders shy of a full file cabinet!

  3. Mama Zen September 18th, 2008 9:42 am

Did you think of lots of brilliant stuff to say after he left? That’s how it works for me!

  4. Nutmeg September 18th, 2008 9:44 am

Oh MZ, I’m still trying to think of something brilliant to say to him!

Ok, I just went there. This was a portion of the first post I read:

“…vend stroke material for your joyless addiction to puns about procrastination and systems for generating more taxonomically satisfying meta-work…”

The next words, in order, that formed in my head were:

    “Um, what?
    Stroke material?
    tax-o-nom-ically, meta-work? Is that like hella-work?”

Me think me too dumb to write.

Oh you just described me to a T. But I wouldn’t have even GONE to the conference for all the FEAR and INSIPID INSECURITY it would have instilled in me. I’m so glad you went. I think it took a lot of guts to talk to a wizard. I mean, he could have totally disintegrated you for saying something he didn’t like. (Okay – I’m coming from a very brain dead place and trying to be funny. Will now go hang my head in shame.)

Whimsy, that made me giggle… He could have stupified me if I hadn’t taken care of it already!

That is sooo awesome you went. I considered it, but the first night was my birthday.

I am so glad you were inspired, because you inspire us sooo much!
